La Tapatia: From parttime business to thriving Central Valley enterprise

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Decades ago, Helen Chavez Hansen turned a dream into a part-time business, which has since grown into a thriving enterprise and delivering some of the valley's tortilla products.
"It was interesting growing up because we always knew my mom made tortillas for a living, that was our company, and we always saw my mom working hard," said Yvette Cuellar, who is one of the daughters and co-owner, of La Tapatia.
La Tapatia launched its first products in 1969, now every day they make hundreds of thousands of tortillas, 30,000 pounds of chips, and 10 to 15 thousand pounds of masa.
"We bring in approximately four to six truckloads of corn per week," said Justin Rushing, who is the general manager. "Right now, it's a very busy time of the year for us because, on top of the masa, we're still producing our tortillas as well."
Each truckload carries 48,000 pounds of corn from a mill in Chowchilla, growing a nongmo variety of corn specifically grown for La Tapatia.
Now their products are spread out across California and can even be found in Korea, China, and Indonesia.
Recently La Tapatia was honored as The Business Journal’s Top Woman Owned Business, a title that Hansen and her four daughters, now key players in the company, are truly humbled to accept.
"It means a lot," Cuellar said. "It means a lot that our community is taking the time to give us any sort of recognition and supporting our company in that way."
Hansen still shows up to work every single day, continuing to guide her daughters and reminding them every now and then who's boss.
"My mom is really active in the company, we joke that she's probably never going to retire," Cuellar said.
For Yvette, Karla, Linda, and Toni keeping their mom's legacy alive is a job they are happy to show up for.
"You know, we want to do our best to make sure that the success that she has achieved continues on," Cuellar said. "It's rewarding working with my family, we enjoy being around each other. I get to see my sisters and my mom every day, a lot of people don't get to have that opportunity."
