An outdoor exhibit where kids can mix learning at the museum with possibly one of the most unique play-areas Albuquerque's ever seen. "We wanted to have something compelling year round for people to enjoy right here in our backyard," said Manager Nan Masland, Balloon Museum. The big idea is to build it behind the museum-facing Balloon Fiesta Park within a half-acre plot of what right now is just a gravel garden. The playscape would include a balloon tower, an amphitheater, and even swings attached to model clouds. "This outdoor exhibit will incorporate many exciting elements including an elevated walkway where folks can stroll through a half-inflated balloon, walk through a fully inflated balloon in the middle, and then climb in a climbing structure that resembles a fully inflated gas balloon," said Masland. On the cusp of their 20th anniversary, the museum is hoping to get construction rolling next year but they still need $4 million for the project. "All we need is the funds we have part of the funds already and we're going to the legislature this year to ask for money and we're also hoping for donations from private donors," said Masland. Some neighbors near the park say they'd love to see it. "I like that idea it will give us more options to take them to the park and play with them that way they can see balloons that we are known for here in Albuquerque," said Cindy Pino, a grandparent. The museum said the project would be built out in two phases with an elevated walkway and balloon tower coming first followed by shade structures, decorations and special lighting. The city has added the project to its capital outlay funding requests which they'll send to lawmakers next month. So far, the museum has one of $5 million needed for construction.
