PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Watchdog group Common Cause Rhode Island filed a complaint with Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore requesting for an investigation into an individual who was involved with the ILO Group contract awarding. An investigation began in 2021 into whether the awarding of a $5 million school reopening contract given to the group violated the state bribery statute. Chiefs for Change former CEO Michael Magee was named in the complaint as an individual who violated a requirement for registering as a lobbyist. The complaint gave accused Magee of lobbying on multiple occasions, including bringing up the ILO Group as a potential contract recipient on a Zoom call with McKee as well as sending communications attempting to “narrow the field” to ILO. The complaint ends by saying that Magee’s name does not appear in any register of lobbyists. The organization also sent a letter to the state Ethics Commission asking for “stricter limits on gifts to public officials from lobbyists, [requiring] additional disclosure of gifts given to public officials, and to conduct a review of the state’s ethics laws as they apply to procurement.” Attorney General Peter Neronha released documents on the investigation into the contract award in October when he announced he would not be seeking charges against Gov. Dan McKee for his role in the process. McKee said he was uninvolved with the contract process and took umbridge with being accused of “bribery.” A spokesperson for Amore confirmed the office had received the complaint and has begun a preliminary investigation process. The full complaint and letter can be found here. Categories: News, Rhode Island
