HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — A man has died after being shot by two High Point police officers inside a McDonald’s late Thursday morning. The incident occurred at the McDonald’s on Mall Loop Road, just yards away from the former Oak Hollow Mall. Police responded to a 911 call shortly after 11 a.m. about a suicidal man inside the restaurant. According to High Point Police Chief Curtis Cheeks, officers arrived to find a 50-year-old man behaving erratically and cutting himself with a razor. By the time they arrived, the man had armed himself with a knife. Officers attempted to communicate with the man and de-escalate the situation, but Chief Cheeks said the man’s actions escalated, leading two officers to fire their weapons. Eden man charged with child abuse after welfare call, police say The man was critically injured and transported by Guilford County EMS to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he died. No one else inside the McDonald’s, including staff and customers, was hurt during the incident. The State Bureau of Investigation is now handling the case, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. Both officers involved were uninjured and have been placed on administrative duty while the investigation continues. Chief Cheeks spoke about the challenges officers face during calls involving mental health crises. “Our officers are trained on de-escalation. They're trained on responding to calls for mental health, and they do so well a great majority of the time. But part of any call for service is the reactionary point based on what an individual does or chooses to do,” Cheeks said. He added that while the department has been exploring alternative responses to mental health-related calls, situations involving weapons and immediate danger still require an armed police response. Man who tried to kill wife in Eden shooting sentenced to decades in prison “That's not something we would send unarmed civilian staff to assist with, so you would still get an armed police response, at least on the initial side. We would expect our folks to make an attempt to de-escalate, which they did in this instance. Again, the unknown is always what reaction you get,” Cheeks said. The chief also addressed the impact such incidents have on officers, noting that the department has protocols to address their mental health. “Physically, both of our officers involved are okay. Obviously, there’s the other side of that as well, and we have some protocols in place that will check on them from the mental health side,” Cheeks said. The SBI has not provided a timeline for when more details will be released.
