(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) has identified the suspect in an officer-involved shooting late Friday night, Dec. 13, on the southeast side of Colorado Springs.
According to EPSO, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) originally responded around 9:40 p.m. on Friday after a man called 911 and said he was outside his home in Fountain with a gun and was suicidal. By the time officers arrived, the man was gone.

Officers tried to talk the man down for almost an hour, but were unsuccessful. During these negotiations, the man fired multiple shots in the area. A less lethal method was used to try and diffuse the situation, but this was also unsuccessful, EPSO said.
When the suspect allegedly raised the gun at law enforcement, several officers fired, hitting the man. Medial aid was provided, but the suspect died on scene. No officers or bystanders were injured in this incident.
On Thursday, Dec. 19, EPSO identified the suspect as 33-year-old Dean Ackerman. The El Paso County Coroner will determine the official cause and manner of death.
Eight CSPD officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave per department policy. EPSO is the lead investigative agency.
