CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Migrant Network is working hard to prepare Charlotte’s Spanish community for an America led by President Elect Donald Trump. The non-profit has spent the past few months hosting “conoce dus derechos” or know your rights meetings. The goal of these events is to educate immigrants on their civil rights. Non-profit Co-Director, Stefania Arteaga, believes Trump will make good on his campaign promise to mass deport undocumented immigrants. According to the American Immigration Council, that could include more than 300,000 people in North Carolina, more than 100,000 of which live in Charlotte. Arteaga says despite their status in the United States, all immigrants have rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. “A right to not open the door without a warrant, the right to remain silent, silent, and request an attorney, their ability not to sign any documents without an attorney present,” Arteaga explained are all rights immigrants have whether undocumented or not. Carolina Migrant Network is handing out red cards that contains a list of all essential rights that aims to help keep immigrants in the know. The list is written in both English and Spanish, and the non-profit encourages immigrants to keep the card on them in case they are ever stopped by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or an ICE agent. Arteaga is not entirely sure how Trump’s deportation plans will play out. “We just want to make sure that people come out and learn and prepare themselves,” Arteaga said. Carolina Migrant Network has scheduled it’s next “know your rights” meeting for Januaury 11th at Saint John’s Baptist Church at 300 Hawthorne Ln. between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. The non-profit plans to continue hosting this informative meetings even after Trump is in office.
