BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Bismarck firefighters brought holiday cheer to children spending Christmas in the hospital by delivering toys Thursday. This annual tradition, now in its 13th year, aims to brighten the spirits of young patients and their families during a challenging time.
“It’s that time of year, and it’s something that we can do to help out the children,” said Battalion Chief Luke Teagle of the Bismarck Fire Department.
Firefighter Matt Wilke emphasized the importance of giving back.
“As firefighters, we like to help the community, and this is just another way to reach out and help kids. We always love helping kids and giving back to the community.”
The firefighters visited CHI St. Alexius Health, where staff witnessed the joy these small gestures brought.

“When you see a child look at all of these toys, and you can tell them to pick out a toy, their smile is just unbelievable,” said Sister Nancy Miller, the hospital’s Mission Integration Director. “It’s a blessing.”
She noted that the holidays are particularly hard for families dealing with a child’s hospitalization.
“No one plans to be in the hospital on Christmas,” Miller said. “When we can give a toy to a patient to lighten their load and stress, it’s a total gift.”
The firefighters expressed their pride in continuing this tradition, which has become a highlight of their year.
“It’s just something special we get to do to make a difference for these kids,” Wilke said.
