MCSO: Continuing to spread awareness on scams impacting our area
Dec 19, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Monroe County Sheriff’s office is warning people ahead of the holiday season of new scams that are on the rise.
Many of the ones seen are saying you were overpaid and they need that money back.
Today Sergeant Cj Zimmerman brought up some disturbing numbers of scams.
He said they did a research about a year ago for only six months, “This was in zone A, just three towns including Penfield, Perinton, and Pittsford. And we pulled the crime reports for these types of cases, there were 21 people between the ages of 39 and 90, who were scammed out of a million dollars. That’s in just six months, in three towns alone.”
He went on to say that those are just the reported numbers and who knows what the unreported look like.
A lot of times we are now seeing pop up ads and quizzes on popular social media sites, and when doing those quizzes he said to stay cautious.
A lot of the times the questions asked are the same questions used to get bank accounts and other sensitive documentation websites.
The sheriff’s office says the best way to deal with situations where you get a text and you think it's a scam, is simply ignore it.
However, if you do believe you were a victim of a scam, they ask you to call 911 and report it.
