Status of drought in western Massachusetts this December
Dec 19, 2024
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - After some very dry weather this fall that led to severe drought conditions and a very high brush fire danger, things have gotten better.
Most areas across western Massachusetts picked up between a quarter inch and a half an inch of rain Wednesday night. And all the rain we've had this month has helped us out with our drought situation.

For the month of December at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee we've picked up 2.45 inches or rain. On average, for the month of December, we usually get around 3.6 inches of rain.
According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor, most of western Massachusetts is still in the severe drought category but we're not seeing any more extreme drought and Berkshire County is now in the moderate drought category.
Some improvement and it looks like we have the chance to some more rain and or possibly snow before the end of the month.
