Scam caller tries to defraud Chesterfield Police investigator, had son’s information
Dec 19, 2024
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Chesterfield Police Department was made aware of a scam targeting county residents when said scammer tried to defraud one of its own investigators, using his son's personal details.
In a Dec. 19 Facebook post, the department put out a scam alert on a new type of fraudulent phone call that's taking aim at county residents -- which it learned of when one of its fraud investigators received said call.
According to police, the scam caller had the investigator's son's personal information, including his name and address. The scammer asked to speak to the boy's parents, claiming he was with an SAT/ACT prep company and that the investigator's son had signed up to receive test prep materials.
The scammer told the investigator that the materials were free, but that a $239 refundable fee needed to be collected over the phone. According to the scammer, that fee would then be refunded once the investigator's son returned the thumb drive that contained the testing materials to the company.
The scammer said he needed the investigator's credit card number to charge that fee.
According to police, the investigator then ended the call and reached out to a counselor at his son's school. That counselor said they had never heard of this test prep service. When the investigator tried the scammer's number again, it was reportedly out of service.
The department is reminding county residents of a few ways to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of a scam like this one:
Always verify the information that you're being given before acting. Scammers want you to feel like you have to act right away, so they create a sense of urgency.
If something feels off, it probably is -- trust your gut and hang up.
If you get a call from an unknown number, let it go to voicemail.
