Our streak of above-normal days ended Thursday with highs failing to hit 40°. In the span of those six above-normal days, three of them had highs in the 50s. The changes are already being felt. The real cold arrives this weekend after a brief bout of snow moves through portions of Central Indiana Friday morning. Since temperatures are above freezing, any activity after 2-3 a.m. will likely start as rain. Then with the colder air rushing in, that will slowly turn to a mix and eventually a steady snow. This will be wet snow and will peak during the Friday morning commute. Areas north/NE of I-74 are in the zone of seeing the most snow. It won't be a big snowmaker but most spots could end up with a little more than an inch of snow. Some isolated spots closer to 2.0" are also possible further north. Less snowfall potential exists south of Indianapolis. The most steady snow will be in the morning. Then, it will taper in the afternoon turning more scattered. It will completely exit Central Indiana at the latest Friday evening. Cold air follows this snow and it will be around for the weekend. The cold front will bring a dip in the jet stream, ushering in the colder, Canadian air back into the region. Highs on Saturday will likely fail to hit freezing with wind chills in the teens possible at times. Current Wind Chills Temperature Departures Saturday While many spots will receive an inch of snow Friday, it will not last on our grounds into Christmas Day. This also means the cold air during the weekend will be brief. Highs above freezing return starting Sunday and we'll get even warmer after that. The last time Indianapolis had a White Christmas (defined as having at least 1 inch of snow on the ground at 7:00 a.m local time Christmas Day) was two years ago in 2022. We'll begin to warm up next week with Christmas Day highs running nearly 10° above average. Christmas Day Temperature Departures From Normal It will also be a wet Christmas instead of a snowy Christmas with how warm we are going to be. I anticipate that rain chances go up starting Monday night. It will continue on and off Christmas Eve with scattered showers forecast Christmas Day Wednesday. The warmth will not finish there, as highs in the 50s return after the holiday. This will be the second consecutive Christmas with highs above normal for Indianapolis.
