INDIANAPOLIS — Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on the near west side Thursday afternoon.
Per the Indianapolis Metro Police Department, officers were called around 2:08 p.m. to a residence on the 300 block of S Warman Ave on the report of a person shot. At the scene, police rendered aid to an adult female — since transported to a hospital in stable condition — when they received information regarding an adult male suspect. Reportedly, he had fired at a house in the area.

When officers arrived on the scene, IMPD said two shots were fired at them while they were inside a fully-marked patrol vehicle.
Officers then identified the suspect at the scene, finding him armed with a machete. According to IMPD, officers approached and chased the individual on foot, giving him multiple verbal commands. However, he did not comply.
Then, IMPD said they ordered the suspect to get on the ground and drop his weapons at least twice. He refused and ran at police with a machete raised over his head in one hand and a firearm in the other.
Ultimately, the incident led to an officer-involved shooting. According to IMPD, two officers fired at the suspect and he was initially transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The suspect has since died from his injuries.
IMPD added that at least two other individuals reported the suspect pointing a firearm in their direction before police arrived, though no uninvolved members of the community were injured.
A machete and a firearm were discovered on-scene, IMPD said.

Additionally, this resulted in Warman Avenue being shut down from Addison Street to Ida Street, with IMPD asking drivers to avoid the area due to high police presence.
This incident marks the 16th officer-involved shooting in Indianapolis this year, nine of which — apart from this one — have been fatal. In 2023, there were 18 officer-involved shootings. 10 of these were fatal.
Investigators are still working to identify the relationship between the suspect and the female victim. At this time, the suspect has not been named.
In line with standard protocol, the officers who fired their issued weapons at the suspect have been placed on administrative leave.
"Once again we find ourselves in a community that has been traumatized by violence," said IMPD Police Chief Chris Bailey.
"My heart goes out to all those impacted, the victims we have encountered here tonight. A neighborhood, our officers, our department and of course, the family and friends of the deceased individual tonight as well. None of us want to be here at this moment talking about these things."
Bailey also called the violence something that happens "...far too often over the past several years." He noted that incidents such as this one put both community members and officers in danger.
