Big Lots to begin goingoutofbusiness sales at all locations
Dec 19, 2024
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WJW) -- Big Lots is now planning going-out-of-business sales at all locations, to preserve the company's value while it works through bankruptcy proceedings, executives announced on Thursday.
The Ohio-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this year. Though it had previously announced an asset sale to a capital management firm to keep from going under, that deal has since fallen through, according to a news release.

The retailer is still working to sell the Big Lots brand and keep some of its remaining stores operating under new ownership -- what's called a "going concern" sale -- and hope to complete that sale by the end of January 2025.
“We all have worked extremely hard and have taken every step to complete a going concern sale. While we remain hopeful that we can close an alternative going concern transaction, in order to protect the value of the Big Lots estate, we have made the difficult decision to begin the [going-out-of-business] process," President and CEO Bruce Thorn is quoted in the release.
