ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A rally is being held at the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Rochester to support a national strike. Amazon workers nationwide are on strike, accusing the multinational company of refusing to bargain with the thousands of workers organized with the Teamsters. The strikes are happening at facilities in New York City, Atlanta, Southern California, and Skokie, Illinois. Picket lines are being set up by local Teamsters unions across the country, including at the ROC 1 facility on Manitou Road. Tim Barbeto, the President of Teamsters Local 118, explains how frustrating it is for Amazon to not bargain with them. "This has been going on for almost two years from what I understand," said Tim Barbeto, the president of Teamsters Local 118. "This is a trend that we need to break and that's why we are demonstrating nationwide." Tim Barbeto President of Teamsters Local #118 A spokesperson for Amazon released a statement about the strikes, accusing Teamsters of misleading the public and lying about representing Amazon employees and drivers: “For more than a year now, the Teamsters have continued to intentionally mislead the public – claiming that they represent ‘thousands of Amazon employees and drivers’. They don’t, and this is another attempt to push a false narrative. The truth is that the Teamsters have actively threatened, intimidated, and attempted to coerce Amazon employees and third-party drivers to join them, which is illegal and is the subject of multiple pending unfair labor practice charges against the union." The Rochester picket will be happening at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
