WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - On Wednesday, a bank scheme was reported to the West Springfield Police Department for tricking an elderly woman into giving away a large sum of money. Later that day, the individuals were arrested for the same crime in Yarmouth. West Springfield police said they received a call from a man concerned about his elderly mother. The victim was told via telephone that her son had been arrested and that he needed bail money, so she promptly withdrew cash from the bank and placed it in a receptacle outside her home. This action was repeated once, and both times it was picked up by a "courier". When the victim got a call from her son, he called the police. Victim identified in deadly Springfield shooting on Fernwold Street On the same day, Yarmouth police caught the two perpetrators of the scheme, 34-year-old Carlos Santos of Methuen and 41-year-old Maria Ayala of Lawerence. They allegedly called a 96-year-old woman pretending to be a bail bondsman and claiming that her son was in jail. When the Yarmouth resident went to the bank and attempted to withdraw $10,000, the bank called the police to report potential fraud. Officer Jefferson Willis identified the situation as a scheme and instructed the victim to send money via a ride-share driver in order to catch the suspects. Yarmouth detectives and the Massachusetts State Police tracked the delivery of the money to Worcester, where they arrested Santos and Ayala and charged them with conspiracy and larceny by a single scheme over $1,200. Another $30,000 was found in their vehicle, which they had received from another scheme they had conducted in West Springfield. The West Springfield Police Department wants to warn others of the dangers of this scheme. If you receive a call from an unknown person claiming that a loved one is in danger and requesting a large sum of money, do not send money, contact your loved one, and reach out to your local police department.
