Weather Forecast: Accumulating snow Friday into the weekend
Dec 19, 2024
ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) - A few passing clouds today could spit out some light snow showers, but most are dry and temperatures are hovering right around freezing.
Thursday night temperatures fall into the 20s and our next system approaches from the west. It's a weakening clipper that will bring some area-wide snow by mid-day Friday. We should be cold enough to get a few tenths of an inch accumulation here. As the storm pulls east and merges with a coastal low over the Atlantic Ocean, winds turn northeast Friday night into Saturday. This will add lake moisture and help boost snowfall. It's so cold that a lighter, fluffier snow will be likely, pushing up snowfall totals over 3" for many going into Saturday.
Increasing pressure Sunday should cut off the snow, but the cutoff time will be important to diagnose. If it's early Saturday afternoon, snow amounts will be held in check. If the north wind persists through Saturday night and doesn't end until early Sunday, amounts could be higher than expected. This whole weekend will be extremely cold with the coldest airmass of the year as temperatures fall into the low teens and wind chills are running near zero.
