The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational is the premier surf event in the world, honoring the memory of Eddie Aikau.
"We're running this event in the name of one of the biggest legends in the sport is surfing, who was a lifeguard here at Waimea Bay," Liam McNamara, the event director explained. "The legacy, the history, the prestige, it's just all there."
McNamara said conditions are prime for the contest to run Sunday, December 22.
"We're in a good place right now. we're pretty confident," McNamara said.
The three elements needed to green light the contest are aligning. The first requirement: wave heights. The Eddie requires consistent 40 foot surf. He said the swell is on its way to arrive 8 a.m. Sunday, coming from the North North West with clean conditions.
"On Friday, we'll be making that final call to go green," McNamara said. "So everybody will have forty eight hours to pack their lunches and get ready for the weekend."
Yellow alert issued for Eddie surf contest to possibly run Sunday
Rocky Canon, Eddie Aikau Broadcast team member Rocky Canon said he has his fingers crossed, hoping and praying to the ocean gods that we are going to have our chance to do it again on Sunday.
If the Bay calls the day this weekend, it will be only the 11th time the prestigious event happened since 1984.
Canon recalls the last event in January 2023.
"I don't remember seeing an Eddie that was that consistent," Canon explained. "And that's huge as far as the amount of large waves, and then of course the cherry on top. You know, having one of our local boys homegrown, Waimea lifeguard, Luke Shepardson take home, the Eddie trophy was just a special day,"
The historic even will draw thousands to Waimea Bay and the beach will be packed with eager onlookers and surfing enthusiasts. Mcnamara is urging everyone who decides to come down to exercise caution.
There were a number of close calls and injuries when the Eddie ran in 2023, requiring lifeguards to rescue spectators swept off their feet by waves washed ashore..
"Be mindful of what the lifeguards say, number one. Last year, the other year we had a lot of water moving around. We had people over there in the corner, on rocks and in bushes," McNamara said. "The Bay here is only so big. Make sure to listen to the lifeguards. Make sure to know where the high water marks are."
