OXON HILL, Md. (DC News Now) -- Over 100 families in Prince George’s County went Christmas shopping Wednesday evening in Oxon Hill and police officers paid the bill in an effort to make all the kids happy for the holidays. Ladareon Atkins is a parent who lives in Temple Hills and has an 11-year-old son who was so happy to get new toys for Christmas. “I am really grateful to get my son some things for Christmas and I appreciate it," Atkins said. "This means too much and it makes us happy." Young girl holds 6th annual toy drive in Montgomery County The Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) partnered with Target to provide $250 gift cards to over 100 families in its Heroes and Helpers program. The program is part of PGPD’s yearlong proactive community policing initiative.  (Tim Reid/DC News Now) (Tim Reid/DC News Now) PGPD spokesperson Brian Fischer said it is the right thing to do to help many families in the community have a brighter holiday. “This is the crescendo. It is the holiday season and it’s the season where families who don’t have it need it the most," he said. "We do this all the time and we love to put smiles on faces for Christmas." Target District Manager Sarah Latham said every year they partner with PGPD and it puts a smile on her face and warms her heart. “For all of us, it makes us super happy just to see those smiles on kids' faces, and at the end of the day it’s about making them happy,” Latham said.
