MARYLAND (DC News Now) -- The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT)'s State Highway Administration (SHA) announced that it was awarded a multi-million dollar grant to help lower construction projects' carbon footprints.
Maryland's SHA received almost $32 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Low-Carbon Transportation Materials grant.
In a news release, the SHA said that this grant will help "advance [its] use of low-carbon materials," which will then help reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.

“Having a world-class transportation system includes using and investing in materials that are better for the environment and create green jobs. This is another example of MDOT leading the way to reduce carbon emissions and support the state’s climate goals,” Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld said in the release.
Officials said that this grant will help Maryland reach its goal of lowering its greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2031 and reaching net zero emissions by 2045.
