Dawkins credits Allen's engagement for recent success

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WROC) — While Josh Allen is not having his best season statistically compared to past seasons, he is still the heavy favorite to win MVP.
Coming off a statement win over the Lions, head coach Sean McDermott said he thinks Allen is playing his best football this year.
Since becoming a Bill in 2018, Allen's always had the physical ability to be an MVP quarterback. But on a personal level, many think Allen is a different player this season.
Leading up to the divisional matchup against the Patriots, Allen said he "feels more comfortable as a leader," allowing him to have more fun.
Dion Dawkins seems to think the reason for Allen's recent success has to do with a part of his life outside of football — his recent engagement to Hailee Steinfeld.
"When you're in the right mental space of going home and everything is peaceful, and going in your cell phone and seeing a heart in your phone and it just makes you bubble or something, it's something about it," Dawkins said. "He's having fun, because everything around him is right. And because he's right, we're right."
Since popping the question, Allen has racked up 13 total touchdowns without throwing an interception. Whether or not his engagement has impacted his performance on the field, Allen can't deny he's having an exceptional season.
"I'm in a spot in my career, in my life, where it's the best I've ever felt," he said. "Just making sure that I'm being me and only me. I think that's the only thing I ever want to be, and I think that's one of the main things of being a leader. Making sure that you know who you are, it's a very obvious thing when guys can see that."
Micah Hyde, despite it only being two weeks since his return to Buffalo, can see the difference in his quarterback, too. He said it would be "pretty darn awesome" to see Allen bring home an MVP award.
"You reach a time in your career where you don't really care about anything outside of what the task is each and every game," Hyde said. "He's going out there and executing the game plan, and some."
Allen's energy this season seems to be felt throughout the entire organization. It might come naturally as the Bills sit at 11-3 with a clinched AFC East title, but Allen makes sure to spread the love throughout the facility.
"Throughout my time I've been here, having fun and making sure I come into this building having a smile on my face. When everybody sees me, I'm making sure I say hello and dap them up and let them know how much I love being here," Allen said. "I think it is infectious, I think it's something that can spread throughout the team."
Dawkins attested to the infectious energy that has started with Allen and spread to his teammates. He even mentioned the impact it's had on their head coach.
"Josh is the head of our football team. When that is right, everything else is right. McDermott is happy, he's doing snow angels. Look at it for what it is, and understand that we're not robots."
Allen and the Bills will look to keep his post-engagement success alive on Sunday as the Bills kickoff against the 3-11 Patriots at 4:25 p.m.
