Oakland’s Dokkaebier brewery closes taproom

(KRON) -- Oakland's only Korean-owned brewery is shutting down its brick-and-mortar location. Dokkaebier, located at 420 3rd St. near Jack London Square, announced on Wednesday that its last day will be on Dec. 29.
Dokkaebier crafts experimental beers using ingredients from Korean culture. Its flavors include kimchi sour, rice kolsch and yuza blonde.
Owner Youngwon Lee cited managing staff and "Oakland's declining market" as reasons for its closure.

Lee says the brewery will remain in operation in a new capacity. It will work to increase its distribution and send its beer to new markets.
"We’re refocusing on what we do best: working with trusted production partners, expanding distribution, and growing Dokkaebier in a lean, efficient, and profitable way. This means more tastings, festivals, and connecting with customers where they are, while bringing Dokkaebier to new markets across the U.S. and beyond," Lee said.
Lee started Dokkaebier at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its physical location opened in April 2023. Just two percent of craft breweries in the United States are Asian-owned, according to a 2021 study by the Brewers Association.
It is named after a Korean mythical creature called “Dokkaebi,” which likes to eat, drink and socialize. The brewery sells chicken in addition to beer.
"2025 will be a new chapter for us, but this is not the end," Lee said.
