WARE, Mass. (WWLP) - We continue our coverage of the controversy at Ware Public Schools involving the school's superintendent. Wednesday night was significant as it was the first meeting since the Ware Teachers Association voted 'no confidence' in Superintendent Michael Lovato. Teachers, parents, and students gathered in the Ware High School's auditorium for the first school committee meeting since the Ware Teachers Association voted no of confidence in school superintendent Michael Lovato. This is in response to the multiple allegations made against Lovato during his 17-month leadership including a hostile working environment, unfair treatment, and even violation of Individualized Education Programs, also known as IEPs, which is a legal document that outlines a student's special education services. Situations that are damaging to students are of the most importance to us, and our membership felt it was time to make these concerns public and known to the school committee. Amber Boucher, Preisdent, Ware teachers Association In response to the vote, Lovato gave a presentation during the committee meeting, to address teachers' and parents' concerns. "We are going to share the facts. Whether it's good or bad. We are going to tell the truth and we are going to tell them--ask the questions you need to. We are going to listen." Michael Lovato, Superintendent, Ware Public Schools Lovato's presentation showed the current progress made in the Ware Public School system…including the graduation rate--but highlighted areas of improvement, like behavior and discipline. Special education was a top concern for many in attendance. One person in attendance shared with 22News, "They have special-ed teachers but they are busy with 20-25 kids. How can they give those kids the individual attention that they need?" School Committee Chair Brian Winslow says that the committee is actively reviewing the concerns of the teachers' association--adding that Lovato has, quote, "dedicated himself to implementing necessary changes that aim at addressing the longstanding challenges to improve the educational experience for all students." Lovato says his presentation will be available on the school's website. We will keep you up to date on any decision made by the school committee regarding these allegations.
