The Salvation Army asks for public's help to reach Red Kettle fundraising goal

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – It's not a jingle bell, but the sound of the other iconic bell of the season from The Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign. "Red Kettle donations make up about 17% of the donations to New Mexico for the entire year," said Scott Johnson, Public Relations Director for The Salvation Army's Southwest Division.

The Red Kettle campaign helps fund services and programs for people in need not just during the holiday season, but year-round. But, a week out from Christmas, The Salvation Army said it needs help reaching its goal. "Usually the last week of the Red Kettle campaign is the largest, especially in the days right before Christmas when people are out doing more shopping and probably more in the holiday spirit than they were earlier in the month," said Johnson.
Right now, The Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign in New Mexico is only at 60% of its $570,000 goal. It's slightly lower than years past which the organization said could be due in part to a late Thanksgiving this year.
"A lot of stores, they start their Red Kettle campaign the day after Thanksgiving. So we're short almost a week of ringing days than we were last year," said Johnson.
The organization also pointed to less foot traffic due to online shopping and simply harder times leading to fewer donations. "If you can't donate monetary they can always donate with their time and ring at one of our red kettles," said Johnson.
He said two hours of ringing leads to about $80 which can feed about 30 people. They hope to see a surge in holiday spirit before Santa comes. "There are thousands of people in our local communities all over New Mexico who are really struggling to get food on the table to keep a roof over their head… so anything anyone can spare no matter how big or small will definitely help those in need for this coming year," he said.
People can donate to the Red Kettle campaign online or text "RedKettles" to 51555. People can also sign up online to volunteer as a bell ringer.
