(WGNO) — A Georgia man was arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 11, following an investigation into an attempted scam in Lafourche Parish. According to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office, the case began on Dec. 10 when an elderly Thibodaux man told the LPSO that he had received a scam notification of an online purchase of a dishwasher. Later, he reportedly received a call from someone claiming to be with the Federal Trade Commission and investigating money laundering. The person claimed that the elderly man should withdraw $40,000 to be picked up by investigators for safe keeping. Houma man arrested in child sex crime investigation The elderly man, working with the LPSO, planned a money pickup for 10 a.m. the following day. Officials say he was given specific instructions from the alleged "scammer" regarding how to package the cash and provide it to the courier. When the alleged courier, identified as 47-year-old Diego Diaz, arrived, he was arrested and booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex. Diaz is suspected not only of having been a courier in similar transactions at other locations, but also being associated with a larger criminal organization which spans the southern United States. Diego Diaz (Courtesy: Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office) Diaz is being held on charges which include conspiracy to commit extortion, conspiracy to commit felony theft and conspiracy to commit the exploitation of the infirmed. He is also being held for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The investigation is ongoing and includes the involvement of neighboring parishes where similar incidents are reported to have occurred.
