KC emergency vehicles turn out for Night Lights at Children's Mercy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- On Wednesday night, Santa ditched the reindeer and sleigh for KC patrol cars and fire trucks.
From police to sheriff's departments and EMTs, more than 100 different crews from far and wide came to bring an early Christmas gift to those looking from their hospital rooms at Children's Mercy.
"They're missing out on a lot of things at school a lot of things with friends and family and to have these communities come together to show support to them really makes them feel special," said the manager of patient and family programs at Children's Mercy, Trista Cobbins.

Cobbins says Night Lights at Children's Mercy started four years ago thanks to Kansas City Police Sergeant Scott Nelson, who brought the idea from his last job in New York.
"The secret is I had to do a favor for Captain Becchina and he owed me a favor and this was my favor," said Sergeant Nelson.
That favor has now turned into an annual tradition with new faces from inside the car to those watching from windows.
"I just want them to get better so they can go home and be with their family and enjoy Santa Clause bringing presents next year," Sgt. Nelson continued.
The parade of lights was also live-streamed by the hospital so that even the kids who couldn't watch from the windows were able to see it on screen.
