SOUTHPORT, Ind. - From vintage Christmas decorations to a flying Santa and sleigh, one Southport man has been bringing holiday cheer to Indy’s south side for 40 years.  There is a story behind every twinkling light, each glowing angel, toy soldier and gingerbread man.  “Believe me it's been a labor of, well I don't know if you call it love, but it's been a labor of something,” laughed Southport resident Greg Schaub. And the tales started 40 years ago for Schaub.  “There's been years I've been out here in pouring down rain and had to make a makeshift tent to go from scene to scene,” explained Schaub. “There's been years I've been literally shoveling four to five inches of snow.” Schaub begins work on his annual Christmas display outside his home around Halloween or shortly after. And the show comes to life as soon as he cues the music up in December.  As the years have passed, the help he receives building the massive display has grown. “It can't be done without it," Schaub said. "I've got a lot of Santa helpers." Those helpers consist mostly of grandchildren, staff from his electrical and mechanical business and interns from Roncalli High School.   Handcrafted timers and electrical systems make each little glimmer unique. There is also a “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” ‘Clark Griswold’ style power system. “So this brings it on. There's a 100-amp contractor up there so everything comes on at once and then boom,” said Schaub. “We are in.” You will find more than 100 different displays in Schaub’s yard. He said he has lost count of the number of bulbs he uses each year. Schaub said he adds something each year like his new shiny Christmas tree. But it all started with one original plastic Santa and snowman that have become centerpieces.  He considers most of his displays to be vintage. “Dude, I'm old school,” smiled Schaub. “The only thing I have blow up or inflatables in my yard are because of my grandchildren. Other than that, we are old-school vintage.” But there is one item Schaub cherishes most.  “My crazy idea was I want to fly Santa and two classic reindeer across my roof,” explained Schaub.  Schaub’s brother helped hand engineer the flying Santa, making each flight past his chimney extraordinarily special. “Flying Santa is everything,” said Schaub. “I lost my brother 27 years ago and so this is a big deal for Santa to fly for me. Because it's my brother. So every year since he's been gone, it's 100% his.” Schaub also dedicates the entire display to a close church friend’s son, 6-year-old Robbie Schutz. Schaub explained the young boy died in a tragic accident more than 20 years ago.  As for why Schaub still puts on the display every year, the answer is simple.  “Every year I'll have a little kid come up to me and go, ‘Oh Mr. this is so awesome. Thank you for doing this.’ What happened three times this year is, I've had Dads just a little younger than me bring their sons and grandkids and telling me, ‘Oh, yeah for 30-something years we always come here."  All these years later, the 70-year-old Southport resident said spreading holiday cheer is what will always make the hard work worth it.
