Fire causes significant damage to cottage in Kahului

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A structure fire in Kahului on Monday evening displaced two adults but caused no injuries, according to the Maui Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the blaze, reported at 5:40 p.m. on December 17 on Puunene Avenue.
Units responded and upon arrival, crews extended hose lines to attack the fire and conducted searches of both the main house and an attached cottage to ensure all occupants had evacuated safely.

The fire was brought under control at 5:53 p.m. and fully extinguished by 7:01 p.m.
The fire caused significant damage to the cottage, with approximately 50% of the structure lost.
Damage is estimated at $47,000 for the cottage, though the value of other damages is still unknown.

Two adults were displaced by the fire and have been put in contact with the American Red Cross for assistance. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
