Kuhio Highway crash claims the life of a Moloaa man

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A Moloaa man has died following a traffic crash on Kuhio Highway near mile marker 18 on Tuesday, Dec. 17. The Kauai Police Department identified the victim as 77-year-old Stuart Hanchett.

The crash occurred around 1:45 p.m. when Hanchett, who was riding a Kawasaki Prairie quad, attempted to cross Kuhio Highway and was struck by a Toyota Tacoma driven by a 69-year-old man from Princeville. The Tacoma was traveling north at the time.
The driver of the Tacoma suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated on scene by American Medical Response (AMR) personnel. However, Hanchett was critically injured and rushed to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Kauai police shut down a section of Kuhio Highway near North Koolau Road for nearly three hours while the Traffic Safety Section conducted an investigation. Drivers were diverted through Koolau Road during the closure.
At this time, speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing. Toxicology reports and an autopsy are still pending.
