CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte parking deck has raised concerns over how dirty it has become. Some feel the filth could be dangerous. Customers who pay between $120 and $160 per month to use the Center City Green Parking Garage, feel sanitation is lacking. Greg Baskwell has paid to park in the deck across from Spectrum Center for two months. It’s closer to his job, but Baskwell is not sure how much longer he’ll be parking there after he found human feces in the stairwell. “There was like this super dark piece of what I’m assuming is human poop. Like, just kind of smushed against the wall,” Baskwell said. He stumbled across the feces after thanksgiving when he was forced to use the garage’s stairwell due to an unresponsive elevator. Baskwell said he could smell the odor from floors above and the feces were not only on the ground. He explained that someone smeared the feces on the stairway wall. Baskwell described it as looking like finger painting. “I let it go for a couple days because I thought, like, surely within a day or two someone’s going to see this and clean it up,” Baskwell said. Unfortunately he was wrong, and when Baskwell checked days later, he noticed nothing had been done about the mess. Baskwell said he emailed parking garage management about the mess, but he never heard back. WCCB checked the garage and the feces have been cleaned. A handful of parkers explained that bad smells, strange colored puddles, and trash are common in the deck. Most customers said they ignore the uncleanliness. One customer who did not want to be identified said she has paid to use the deck for two years, but has never seen any cleaners in that time. Baskwell believes the dirty garage could pose a health threat. “We’re walking in it and stepping in our cars, then carrying that in our houses and stuff like that. that’s not okay,” Baskwell said. Baskwell shared an email from the parking deck management. The message explained that parking costs will increase by about $20 dollars a month starting January 1st. In the email, management explained the change is necessary to provide “…quality service and to maintain the facility.” WCCB reached out to Center City Green to ask why it took so long to clean the feces off of the wall, and how exactly higher prices will help with maintenance. Those questions have not yet been answered.
