IDENTIFIED: Woman mauled to death by dogs in Coarsegold

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The 18-year-old woman who was killed after being mauled to death by dogs on tribal trust land in Coarsegold has been identified by officials.
The attack happened on Monday, December 16, around 3:30 p.m. According to officials, deputies were dispatched to Road 417 near Quartz Mountain Road after a report of a dog mauling in the area. The reporting party said they saw two Pitbull Mix dogs covered in blood, and a third nearby.

When deputies arrived, they found a woman who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to Madera County officials, the woman was identified as 18-year-old Lexis Salas. Officials say she had been in the area visiting from Fresno.As deputies attempted to remove the canines from the house, two of the three dogs escaped. Deputies say one of the dogs fled the area and the other was put down at the scene.
Deputies found the last dog on Tuesday morning and put that dog down as well.

Sheriff Tyson Pogue said a neighbor came forward and explained that he takes care of the dogs.
Officials say Madera County’s animal control has no jurisdiction on tribal trust land. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and detectives are working with the Madera County District Attorney’s Office to determine if any criminal charges are appropriate.
