SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Federal authorities have released a joint statement in response to the recent reported drone sightings across the United States, including in San Diego County. According to a joint statement Sunday by the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Defense, they recognize the concern the increased drone sightings have caused in many communities. Moreover, the FBI has received tips regarding more than 5,000 reported drone sightings in recent weeks and have over 100 leads. The mysterious drones were first spotted in northern New Jersey in mid-November. Now, they’ve been seen all over the country, from New York and Maryland to Minnesota and California, and even internationally. "We assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones," the joint statement said. It continued, "We have not identified anything anomalous and do not assess the activity to date to present a national security or public safety risk over the civilian airspace in New Jersey or other states in the northeast." A video on Dec. 11 taken around 6 p.m. in Escondido has garnered thousands of views on TikTok. "The drones have arrived in north county San Diego," it said. In a statement Monday morning, a spokesperson for Camp Pendleton said the base was aware of reported drone sightings in the area, but the activity was not related to their operations.
