Khazar and Nima Momeni facing civil trial after murder verdict
Dec 18, 2024
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Nima Momeni, the killer of tech mogul Bob Lee, was convicted of second degree murder this week. Prosecutors said Momeni made a cold and calculated decision to murder Lee in San Francisco on April 4, 2023 to get revenge for his sister. After the jury's guilty verdict was announced on Tuesday, Lee's family vowed to continue seeking justice through filing a civil case against Momeni's family members, including his sister, Khazar.
Inside the courtroom on Tuesday, the killer turned around and locked eyes with his mother, Mahnaz Tayarani. The mother formed her hands into the shape of a heart, reassuring her son that she still loved and supported him.

Bob Lee's ex-wife, Krista Lee, revealed that her family is preparing for a civil trial against Momeni, Khazar, Khazar's husband, and Momeni's mother for their alleged attempt to cover up the crime after Bob Lee was stabbed to death. "They are all absolutely guilty," Krista Lee told KRON4.
Krista Lee said she recently obtained new information that will allegedly expose more about the Momeni family's attempted coverup, and the information will be used for a civil trial. Krista Lee met privately with District Attorney Brooke Jenkins on Tuesday afternoon.

For his high-profile criminal trial, Momeni testified that he acted in self-defense. Momeni claimed he made a "bad joke" about Bob Lee spending time in strip clubs instead of with his family. Bob Lee "blew up" with anger and attacked with a knife, the defendant testified. Jurors did not believe Momeni's self-defense claim and reached a unanimous verdict for second-degree murder.
Prosecutors said the murder case's motive centered on Khazar and Momeni was an "overprotective big brother."
Khazar was a no-show for Tuesday's verdict. She only showed up at court for her brother's arraignment and when she was ordered to testify for the trial. Khazar defended her brother's character in front of the jury and talked about her relationship with Lee. Khazar and Lee partied together in the days leading up to his death. At one of the parties, Khazar said she was sexually assaulted by Lee's drug dealer on April 3, 2023 and she called her brother for help.

After he drove his sister home to Millennium Tower, Momeni called Bob Lee to interrogate him, asking why was Khazar naked at the party and did anything "inappropriate" happened, the victim's friend testified.
Krista Lee's emotions boiled over during Khazar's fourth day on the stand. "My husband was murdered. She has no right to make herself a victim in this. She can go f**k herself," Krista Lee said.
Defense attorneys and prosecutors both told the jury that Khazar lied on the witness stand and she struggles with drug addiction.
Surveillance videos showed Bob Lee and Momeni left Khazar's condo around 2 a.m. on April 4, 2023. Thirty minutes later, the two men stepped out of Momeni's white BMW under the Bay Bridge and Bob Lee was stabbed through the heart.
Momeni was the only person charged with a crime in connection to Lee's death. KRON4 asked Tayarani on Tuesday about the looming civil battle. She shook her head and simply answered, "They can do anything they want."

Tayarani had tears in her eyes as she called the verdict unfair this week. "My son is not the person that they think. He’s very kind," she told reporters. She hung up a sign outside the courthouse reading, "Self defense is not a crime." The mother attended every day of her son's two-month-long trial.
Police detectives who investigated the murder case testified about what happened after the tech mogul was slain. Detectives said Momeni's mother, sister, and brother-in-law refused to cooperate with their investigation. It took investigators nine days before they had enough evidence to arrest him.

Just before dawn on April 13, 2023, San Francisco Police Department officers executed three search warrants at three homes simultaneously. As a SWAT team stormed into Momeni's Emeryville home, another team raided Khazar’s luxury condo on the 41st floor of Millennium Tower in San Francisco.
The third SFPD team searched a condo on the 29th floor of Millennium Tower where Khazar’s husband, plastic surgeon Dino Elyassnia, lives. Elyassnia refused to answer "basic questions,” such as giving his phone number and spelling his name, homicide detective Domenico Discenza testified. Khazar also refused to answer any questions to help police solve their murder case.
SFPD Lt. Phillip Gordon said his team was unable to find Momeni's white BMW and the clothing that he wore during the killing. Momeni testified that by the time police showed up, he had already left his BMW and clothing at his mother's house. Prosecutors said Tayarani sold the BMW.

Momeni's family hired defense attorney Paula Canny, gave her all of their cellphones, and bought new cellphones, according to trial testimony. Khazar and her husband paid for Momeni's defense attorneys, later hiring attorneys Saam Zangeneh, Bradford Cohen, Tony Brass, and Zoe Aaron.
Momeni and Khazar are not only siblings, but they are also "super friends," a prosecutor said, adding, "they hung out all the time, texted all the time." In the days after the homicide, the siblings' text messages suddenly stopped.
Brass said Momeni plans to appeal his criminal conviction. "Obviously anyone in his position is going to feel very disappointed. This is a very painful day and this is not the end of this story. There were a lot of decisions made. Some of them we don’t think were right and that’s why we have an appellate court."
Jenkins said her prosecutors are ready to fight once an appeal is filed. "A defense lawyer worth their salt is going to file an appeal of any conviction. I have great confidence (prosecutors) will do everything that we need to sustain this conviction."

Krista Lee said she was happy that Momeni is now a convicted murderer. "Let's get this a**hole sentenced and put away," she told reporters.
Momeni is facing 16 to life when he is sentenced in 2025. He will remain locked in a San Francisco County jail until his next court appearance on January 10.
