SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – An integral and beloved part of Savannah government, former Alderman Clifton Jones Jr. has passed away, but his legacy will always remain. A kind soul and someone who always stood up for what he believed in and for his community is how colleagues, friends, and mentees describe former Alderman Jones. He served four consecutive terms while representing the 5th District for 16 years on City Council which is how the former Alderman will be remembered. But before he was an Alderman, he was a community leader. He served for 26 years as the Neighborhood Association President, explained mentee and Alderwoman Estella Shabazz. He took those morals, lessons and experiences with him to take care of the people of Liberty City, Rich Field and south over into serving the entire 5th District. Among his many other accomplishments as an alderman he's largely known for advocating for the streets of Liberty City to be paved-after residents complained for years about the aftermath of storms in the area with dirt roads. "The Liberty City Improvement Association led a real movement to get the streets paved in Liberty City, and they were successful, and then he went on from that kind of effort. He and his wife into city government, and he was always an advocate for those areas that were less fortunate or underdeveloped," 64th Mayor of Savannah Otis Johnson said. His former mentee shared how he shaped her to take over the district that he once served and how he stressed the importance of knowing who she served. Dr. Estella Shabazz described the late alderman as, "A responsible alderman, he was responsible for taking ownership of his actions and what was voiced to him from the community and taking it back down to city hall. That was one of the lessons that I learned from Alderman Jones, that I was the representative of the people." Alderman Jones had a significant impact, and we will keep you updated as we learn how you can pay your respects.
