OTERO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – A La Luz man is dead after breaking into a home on Appler Road Saturday night. According to the New Mexico State Police, the 39-year-old homeowner shot and killed 45-year-old Lucas Eli Moore after Moore broke into the house where three young children were sleeping. The break-in occurred at around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday night. The investigation indicates that the homeowner, his 38-year-old wife, and three children were in the home when Moore began banging on the door. Police say Moore then broke the door open and entered the home. Man in custody after firing ‘several hundred rounds of ammunition’ in Rio Rancho The homeowner reported that before the shooting, he repeatedly told Moore to leave. Instead, Moore headed to the kitchen, directly down the hall from the rooms where the children were sleeping. Moore attempted to strike the homeowner, and the homeowner fired at least one shot from his handgun. Police say the homeowner then called 911, and when they arrived, Moore was pronounced dead. NMSP's Investigations Bureau is investigating the shooting, and so far, no charges have been filed against the homeowner. None of the family members were injured in the shooting or break-in.
