What year was the coldest Christmas in Richmond history?
Dec 18, 2024
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Throughout history, Richmond has seen a wide range of weather conditions on Christmas Day. Here's a breakdown of some of the most extreme temperatures and precipitation the region has seen over the last century.
The year 1983 was a particularly cold Christmas, as morning temperatures were frigid at 3 degrees, and it only warmed up to 14 degrees later that same day.
As for snowfall, there's an important distinction to be made between a "Christmas Snowfall" and a "White Christmas." Christmas snowfall is defined as snow that actually fell on Christmas day, while a White Christmas is waking up to snow on the ground.
The year 1914 was a memorable Christmas as we saw over 5 inches of snow that fell that day, with 5 inches of snow already on the ground.
Richmond hasn't only had cold Christmases, however, some of our warmest years have been from the last decade.
The year 2015 was an incredibly warm Christmas, as temperatures rose to a balmy 75 degrees that afternoon.
With one week to go for this year's Christmas Day, we're expecting highs in the lower 50s with chances for rain showers later in the day.
