WAREHAM, Mass. (WPRI) — A New Bedford man was arrested Monday after shoplifting and fleeing from officers in Wareham, according to police. Wareham officers responded to the Target on Cranberry Highway around 3:30 p.m. for reports of an active shoplifter. Police said the suspect, identified as 65-year-old John Vacchino Jr., left the store and got into a waiting car. When officers stopped the vehicle in the parking lot, police said Vacchino Jr. fled on foot. After a brief chase, officers took him into custody. Police said Vacchino Jr. was found with "tools to defeat security devices." Further investigation revealed he had an outstanding warrant in New Hampshire and four others in Massachusetts. Vacchino Jr. is facing several charges, including shoplifting, possession of anti-theft device removers and being a fugitive from justice. He was held without bail and arraigned in Wareham District Court on Tuesday. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Breaking News SIGN UP NOW
