LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – A shooting this week, at a private school in Madison, Wisconsin has shocked the nation, as officials look into the motive behind the fatal tragedy.
Police say the shooter was a 15-year old girl, and that she killed a teacher and a student, before taking her own life.
Sara Crum, the Superintendent of Jessamine County Schools, spoke about the measures they have in place and her thoughts when she heard about the recent shooting in Wisconsin.
“Every time that happens, and of course it’s happening more than any of us would ever want, every time that happens it definitely hits close to home for us,” said Crum. “It’s just, they’re all kids and it’s heartbreaking that those situations occur.”
Crum says every time a school shooting happens, it makes them work harder to try to make sure they keep students safe. And to make sure they’re loved and supported so kids don’t turn to violence.
Crum says Jessamine County has several safety measures in place, including having a resource officer in every school. She adds a big part of the safety initiative is building relationships with students.
“So that our students know, number one that if they are struggling with mental health or bullying that they have that person that they can go to. Or if a student hears of another student struggling or has concerns that those relationships are in place so our students feel comfortable going to an adult for help”
Schools also make sure doors are locked, check all visitors and stage drills to make sure all students know what to do in an emergency.
We are hearing of more school shootings in the last few years., with the incident in Wisconsin just the latest tragedy.
Crum says while she does not know the answer to the increase, she says social media does seem to be a factor.
“That has brought a new layer of kids being able to say things to each other that they may not say face to face. To be on electronics, we know that’s not great for kids and for their brains. But those are all just guesses as to why things have changed.”
Crum feels the best thing for prevention is helping students to be connected and have a trusted adult to talk to.
