With a wave of low pressure and a frontal boundary sliding through the heart of the commonwealth it was a wet Wednesday across the area especially during the morning hours. Steady rain and even a few rumbles of thunder made for a damp and dreary day with most locations picking up one inch plus totals by the time showers moved out late in the day. We had quite the temperatures spread thanks to the frontal boundary with our southern counties reaching the mid to upper 50s early in the day while the Bluegrass region remained cooler in the low 40s from start to finish. We should be in between storm systems on Thursday so look for a dry and cooler day across the area. Low level moisture should keep a low to mid-level cloud deck in place despite the model data indicating some clearing so we may be dealing with some stubborn cloud cover through the day, which is a scenario that has played out a few times over the last several weeks. The clouds sticking around will naturally have an impact on temperatures with afternoon highs struggling to get out of the 30s in most locations, although any clearing before sunset may boost readings over the 40 degree mark. A fast moving clipper system will dive into the Great lakes and the Ohio Valley as we close out the week on Friday, bringing the chance for a few rain and/or snow showers. The majority of the moisture will be closer to the main surface low over the Great Lakes so we aren’t expecting much of an impact from this system, although the highest ridgetops in the eastern mountains could see a quick burst of snow showers into Friday night. Afternoon highs will be in the mid to upper 30s, which will be a prelude of things to come this weekend. The Winter Solstice occurs at 4:20 AM Eastern time on Saturday and right on cue it will feel like the holiday season over the weekend. While we aren’t looking at any precipitation chances and should remain dry, a few clouds may drift through Saturday with more in the way of sunshine for Sunday. Expect a cold weekend from start to finish with afternoon highs in the mid-30s and early morning lows in the upper teens and low 20s. For those that want a holiday feel to our weather with cold temperatures unfortunately you may be out of luck this year as our pattern shifts heading into Christmas week. A return flow will set up Monday as high pressure drifts eastward so temperatures will be on the rise as afternoon highs reach the mid to upper 40s by Monday. A few waves of energy will move through the Ohio Valley late Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day so we are looking at a wet holiday here in 2024 as afternoon highs climb into the low 50s with a few rain showers on tap through next Wednesday.
