JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A retired Jefferson City priest who admitted to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the church over the summer has now been sentenced for sending part of the money to his sister.
The Rev. Ignazio C. Medina, also known as Ignatius, was sentenced Wednesday to three months in federal prison without parole for sending his sister the money, according to the Justice Department.
Medina will also have to pay a $7,500 fine.
Medina was the pastor at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville from 2013 to 2021. An investigation began in 2018 when irregularities were found in the church's books, the Justice Department says. In 2020, Medina reported having a hidden account with nearly $360,000 from church funds, a news release says.
Medina wrote a check to his sister in Tucson, Arizona, for $100,000 in 2021, the Justice Department says. Medina allegedly told investigators the money in the account was donated for his discretionary use. He allegedly misled donors about their purpose.
He was barred by the diocese earlier this year after a church trial determined he was guilty of soliciting sex from an adult during a confession
Medina pleaded guilty in June to a federal charge of transporting stolen property across state lines.
