Honolulu Fire offers holiday safety tips

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The holidays provide many opportunities to celebrate, but some of these can be a fire risk.

Honolulu Fire Department fire inspector Tommy Inouye provides some tips on how to keep your home and property safe during the season.
· Water your tree every day
· Use lights that are listed by a qualified testing lab
· Always turn off your Xmas tree when leaving your home or going to bed
· Do not overload outlets
· Replace any string of lights with worn-out broken cords or loose bulb connections

· Do not use candles!
Outdoor Grilling Safety
· Never leave grills unattended.
· Grills should only be used outdoors.

· Set your grill in an open area at least 10 feet away from buildings.
For Gas Grills (Lots of people deep fry turkeys)
· Ensure the hose connection is tight, and check for leaks by spraying a diluted solution of soap and water on the hose and fittings. If bubbles form, turn the cylinder off, and do not use it until the leaks are fixed.

· Keep a small spray bottle of water nearby for grill flare-ups
· Turn the grill and cylinder off immediately after use, and ensure the cylinder valve knob is completely turned to the shut-off position before storing.
