CHICAGO (WGN) – The home stadium of the Chicago White Sox won't be called Guaranteed Rate Field come the start of the 2025 season. The baseball stadium, which opened in 1991 as the "new" Comiskey Park, is officially changing its name to Rate Field. The name change comes after the sponsor of the ballpark, a Chicago-based company called Guaranteed Rate, changed its name to Rate. (AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast) “Rate has long been a valued naming rights partner, sharing the White Sox passion for the Chicago community and sports fans near and far,” said Brooks Boyer, White Sox chief revenue and marketing officer. “Like the White Sox, Rate is rooted in Chicago and committed to providing elite service to its customers. We look forward to welcoming fans to Rate Field to enjoy our ballpark experience, creating lasting memories for fans for years to come.” The Guaranteed Rate Companies bought the naming rights for the ballpark in 2016, after a 13-year period when it had been known as U.S. Cellular Field. Prior to this, it was known as the second Comiskey Park, having been built as a replacement to the original Comiskey Park. Upon its renaming to Guaranteed Rate Field in 2016, the reaction among fans wasn't exactly enthusiastic. One called it "just awful," and another said they hoped Guaranteed Rate would go out of business so the stadium could be renamed once again. "There are brutal ballpark names, there are ballpark names that inspire feelings of despair and hopelessness, and then there is Guaranteed Rate Field," Chicago Sun-Times sports columnist Rick Morrissey wrote at the time. Rate Field, meanwhile, may please at least one early critic, who felt "Guaranteed Rate Field" was too long. "Short and sweet works for me," a fan suggested in 2016. The Chicago White Sox open up the 2025 season at home on March 27.
