(WFRV) - With more and more reports of drones being sighted in the United States, some may wonder if it is legal to shoot down a drone in Wisconsin.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says that it is illegal under federal law to shoot at an aircraft. Officials say that private citizens shooting any aircraft is a 'significant' safety hazard.
A drone that is hit by gunfire could crash and cause damage to things on the ground or collide with other objects in the air, according to the FAA.

Below is the statement from the FAA provided to Local 5:
It’s illegal under federal law to shoot at an aircraft. A private citizen shooting at any aircraft – including unmanned aircraft – poses a significant safety hazard. An unmanned aircraft hit by gunfire could crash, causing damage to persons or property on the ground, or it could collide with other objects in the air. Shooting at an unmanned aircraft could result in a civil penalty from the FAA and/or criminal charges from federal, state, or local law enforcement

The FAA also linked to the applicable federal law regarding shooting aircrafts, unmanned or not.
Experts who study unmanned aircraft systems — better known as drones — say it can be tough to tell from miles away. But there are clues.
A light in the sky at night can easily be misinterpreted, according to John Slaughter, director of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Research and Operations Center at the University of Maryland.
