Indiana state parks offering special hikes on New Year's Day
Dec 18, 2024
(WANE) -- One of the most common New Year's resolutions people make each January involves increasing physical activity, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering Hoosiers a chance to start 2025 on the right foot.
On New Year's Day, Indiana's state parks and lakes will be offering "First Day Hikes" that aim to let people experience nature and connect with other people.
First Day Hikes is a national initiative that started in Massachusetts more than 20 years ago, according to the DNR.
Here is a list of state parks and lakes in northeast Indiana that will be hosting First Day Hikes events:
Chain O' Lakes State Park: Those interested should meet at the boat rental parking lot at 11:00 a.m. for a 1.5-mile hike over "easy terrain." Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided afterward. A $1 donation is suggested.
Mississinewa Lake: Join Upper Wabash Interpretive Services staff at 10:00 a.m. for a 1-mile hike through the woods. Friendly dogs on leashes are welcome. Advance registration is requested by calling 260-468-2127
Ouabache State Park: Meet at the bison enclosure parking lot at 10:00 a.m. for a hike around the enclosure. The hike is mostly on a level, gravel surface and includes a stop at the feeding station to observe the bison.
Pokagon State Park: Meet at the CCC Shelter at 9:00 a.m. for a 2.5-mile hike through the park. Friends of Pokagon will provide refreshments at the CCC Shelter after the hike. Parking is available at the shelter and the main beach.
Salamonie Lake: Meet at the Interpretive Center at 4:30 p.m. for a hike along Salamonie Lake's Tree Trail. S'mores will be provided afterward. Advance registration is requested by calling 260-468-2127
The DNR recommended people dress appropriately for the weather. Other DNR events for New Year's Day can be found online.
