Churches offer showers to unsheltered
Dec 18, 2024
(COLORADO SPRINGS) -- Two churches in Colorado Springs have come together to help the unhoused community by offering them a place to take a shower--it's often something that can be taken for granted by so many, but for thousands of people in Southern Colorado, a shower can be life-changing.
Whether it's after a long day of work, going to the gym, or just a way to relax, feeling refreshed and clean is the best feeling for so many, but that simple luxury is not something available to thousands in our community.
"If you aren't getting a shower and you're living on the street a lot of how you feel and how you're treated is that somehow, you're less than human, so, having a shower is providing them something that we take for granted," said Chris McCarthy, a volunteer for Shower to the People.
The Sanctuary Church and Sacred Heart Church in Old Colorado City are calling the program "Shower to the People," and just last year they helped more than 800 people.
"Someone who was there to shower was pre job interview, and they came back a couple weeks later and told us they did get the job," said McCarthy.
Shower to the People was initially created by the Sanctuary Church in 2022, after they received a generous donation to remodel the old carriage house on their property, creating space for four shower stalls.
"Shower to the People" expanding services for unsheltered.
"Another gentleman who I had met a few times, I knew him by name, and I called him by name, and I heard him say to someone else with surprise, 'oh my gosh, she called me by name.' And that really struck me because I think a lot of the time, the homeless are seen as invisible," said McCarthy.
They say an average of 65 showers occur each week, and 65% of those are from regular users while the other 35% are new to the program.
"Anything the community wants to do to help keep this ministry alive, I'd love to see it be expanded because it is very valuable. We do sometimes have to turn away people because we run out of time and, you know, nobody likes to do that," said McCarthy.
Shampoo and soap are supplied to each person, along with other things like toothbrushes, shaving tools, blow dryers, nail clippers, and even a pair of fresh socks and underwear.
The churches hope to expand their hours but have limited resources. So, they are asking the community to donate their time or any shower supplies they can.

"Nobody likes to turn somebody away for something as basic as a shower," said McCarthy.
Showers are available on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and Sundays 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
