City of Kyle flags 'increased presence' of feral hogs
Dec 18, 2024
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The city of Kyle is working to mitigate a growing number of feral hogs spotted within the city, the Kyle Parks and Recreation Department shared on Facebook Tuesday.
City staff have an existing feral hog trapping contract and are reviewing opportunities for how to tackle "the increased presence" of the hogs. City leaders are also looking into other solutions to minimize the feral hogs' impacts on public land and local ecosystems, per the Facebook post.
Feral hogs can be aggressive and Kyle PARD cautioned residents to maintain a safe distance. Officials discouraged feeding the hogs and said that, should you encounter one, to remain calm and back away slowly. It is dangerous to try and chase or corner them, Kyle PARD added.
Residents and businesses are also advised to secure any trash, pet food or other food sources, since those attract the animals. Those who spot any feral hogs are asked to notify the city by reporting the sightings at [email protected].
HOG NEWS: Wild hogs still going wild in Texas — what can be done?
Feral hogs are by no means new to Central Texas. Back in January, KXAN spoke with two women who stumbled across a horde of feral hogs while biking along an east Austin trail.
As of 2019, El Paso County was the only county in Texas that wasn't occupied by the feral swine, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Beyond Texas, the invasive animals are also commonly found across the country, reported in at least 35 states and with a population surpassing six million, the National Invasive Species Information Center noted.
"Range expansion over the last few decades is due to a variety of factors including their adaptability to a variety of climates and conditions, translocation by humans, and a lack of natural predators," the National Invasive Species Information Center wrote.
