Northern Virginia pediatrician shares medicine cabinet essentials to buy with FSA money
Dec 18, 2024
RESTON, Va. (DC News Now)- Health experts say that the end of the year is a great time to stock up on medicine cabinet essentials for children, especially as flexible spending accounts (FSAs) are set to expire.
Funds in certain tax-advantaged accounts, such as FSAs, will expire at the end of the year and will be gifted back to the account owner's employer if they're not used.
Dr. Helai Ghani of Kids Care First said a number of HSA and FSA-eligible products contribute to effective telehealth appointments. She operates an online store, stocking her favorite items for parents to keep on hand.
"The biggest barrier obviously is the equipment and supplies," Dr. Ghani said.
She advises that parents have a working scale and age-appropriate thermometer on hand. She also advises parents to use rectal thermometers for children under a year old for the most accurate reading possible. It's critical for parents to have an accurate weight for their child so doctors can dose medication properly.

Other handy gadgets for virtual doctor's office visits include oximeters to measure pulse and wireless otoscopes, which are small cameras for doctors to examine a child's ear to diagnose an ear infection. Amazon offers an iPhone-compatible otoscope for under $40.
Dr. Ghani said parents should keep fever reducers and pain relievers on hand, such as ibuprofen. She said electrolyte packets and humidifiers are also handy products to keep in the house.
A mother of four, Dr. Ghani also keeps vitamins on hand.
"Immune boosters are great to have for the season. So vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D and elderberry have been shown to boost the immune system. We always keep the elderberry on hand. And I feel like it does make a little bit of a difference," she said.
The Employee Benefit Research Institute claims that about half of FSA owners forfeit at least some of their funds at the end of the year. Billions of dollars in unspent funds are returned to employers each year.
DC News Now found users can automate their claims for FSA reimbursement through the Silver app, which analyzes shoppers' receipts from online marketplaces such as Amazon and Costco.
