TOPEKA (KSNT) - Kansans will be able to start buying several new types of license plates at the start of the new year to show their love for sports teams like the Kansas City Chiefs or the history of the state's first city. Kansas residents already have dozens of different options to choose from when looking for a distinctive license plate on their vehicles to give them a little extra personal touch. However, state lawmakers and Governor Laura Kelly approved of eight additional new distinctive license plates during the 2024 session of the Kansas Legislature with the passage of Senate Bill 359. What new laws go into effect in Kansas on Jan. 1, 2025? 27 News reached out to the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) this week to learn where things stand with the new plate designs. KDOR spokesman Zach Denney said Kansans should not have to wait long before they can start browsing the new designs. "All the new distinctive plates in SB 359 should be available starting January 1 or shortly after," Denney said. "KDOR works closely with the requesting organization to ensure their plate is ready on time, but each plate must undergo its own design and approval process, which can vary in duration." Denney said people can start ordering one of the distinctive plates approved in 2024 on Jan. 1, 2025 from their local county treasurer. Each distinctive plate will have a set "specialty plate fee" of $48.50 along with a royalty fee determined by whichever organization is sponsoring the plate.
