SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - Gilliard and Company, a local nonprofit that provides resources for people aging out of foster care system, is making spirts brighter for the fifth year in a row.
Through community donations and local partners, the agency was able to gift at risk youth with Christmas presents on Tuesday.
“When they come in, they sign in at the registration,” Chief Executive Officer Whitney Gilliard said. “They get a stamp on their hand for photos, and they want to take pictures and they're going to walk around this entire room and they’re going to pick out the gifts that they want.”
Gilliard told News 3 she was in foster care from age 16 to 21.
“There are many times where I would have social workers and different ad litem guardians in the courthouse ask me what I wanted for Christmas,” Gilliard said. “I really didn't have anything because when you are living in a group home from one place to another, the first thing you think about is accessibility and mobility. Can I move these things?”
However, one year, Gilliard received Christmas presents. She said it’s a warm feeling that she will never forget.
I Is We Incorporated, a local nonprofit was the beneficiary this year, which allowed their children and teens to shop around for two to three gifts.
“They were definitely excited because a lot of them had that feeling of ‘I might not get anything’,” founder Alonzo Truitt said. “They come to depend and rely on me, my wife, the organization and the things we do. It’s difficult for me to do everything that I want to do for the kids with my own pockets.”
Gilliard and Company hopes to serve around 50 kids this year.
“It doesn't stop getting emotional,” Gilliard said. “I’m just really grateful that I know there's Christmas in these homes, and it's all because people came in and there are local heroes.”
She continued, “They came in and brought these toys in when they didn't have to, because at the end of the day, all this sends a message to the people that we're serving and to the kids and the young people. We love them. They're never going to be forgotten.”
