Coolest day of week but still dry across New Mexico
Dec 18, 2024
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Northeasterly gusty winds are bringing colder air from the Northeast Highlands to the Pecos River Valley this morning with below-freezing temperatures for the northern two-thirds of the region with mostly clear skies and dry air. Bitterly cold air is once again present in the San Luis Valley to the Enchanted Circle as air temperatures are in the single digits to low teens for some areas, while most areas are experiencing air temperatures in the teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, and even the 50s from north to south from high to lower elevation as colder air is starting to arrive higher up in the atmosphere, but most valley areas, other than the East Highlands, are starting off milder.

With some decks of mid-to-high-level clouds moving mostly to the southeast of the region later this afternoon with the upper-level winds, as well as calmer surface winds switching to from the south-southeast, dry-enough air will lead to no precipitation. Afternoon temperatures will be mostly above normal, but slightly cooler in most areas because of the tail-end of yesterday's warmer and windier pattern, now starting to slightly more-calmly shift the winds from the north-northeast to from the east-northeast for the eastern to southern half of the region, leading to the slight cooldown. From the morning school commute through the afternoon, temperatures will reach into the upper 30s, 40s, 50s, and near 60s from north-northeast to south-southwest.
A warmer air-mass will return tomorrow, as despite a couple of very slight cooldowns ahead being accompanied by slightly lighter winds, generally warmer weather will continue for at least the next several days as some passing upper-level clouds will continue to be a signal of slightly breezier weather returning each other day for some areas, locally elevating the fire threat occasionally with a few areas of blowing dust possible, as well as some patchy blowing snow in the higher elevations.
