Back on top: Independent Man back returns back to State House dome

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Independent Man made his grand return to the top of the State House dome after a year on the ground.
Crews hoisted the iconic 15-foot-tall golden statue back to his perch on Wednesday, and residents said they had been eagerly anticipating the moment.
The statue was removed last year to repair a cracked marble base.
While off the dome, experts cleaned and restored him, bringing back his brilliant golden shine.
During his absence, the Independent Man spent some time on display inside the State House, giving residents a rare chance to see him up close.
The project faced delays earlier this year after Hurricane Helene, damaged marble suppliers in the south.
This year marks the 125th anniversary of the installation of The Independent Man atop the state house dome, making his return even more special for Rhode Islanders in time for the holidays.
“It’s a historical time because I don’t think in our lifetime he’ll be coming back down again, but they did a wonderful job… he’ll look great up there,” said Joe Chestnut, a Cumberland resident.
“He protects the state of Rhode Island, no matter where evil may lie, Cranston, Pawtucket, Exeter, it don’t matter, he got new gold now,” said James Brown, a Cranston resident.
One resident, Joe Mascado, said he was there back in the 70s when the Independent Man was last taken down.
“They did it with a helicopter, the pilot is here. I was here for both,” he said.
This return marks the end of a year-long restoration process, bringing an iconic Rhode Island symbol back to its place of honor over Providence..
For many, it’s more than just a statue, it’s a reminder of Rhode Island’s resilient spirit and history.
